International Tribal Art Fair – Amsterdam 2021

Following the success of the first online Tribal Art Fair Amsterdam at the end of October 2020, the organizer decided to host an online spring exhibition. The Tribal Art Fair Amsterdam Online, featuring 30 art dealers from nine countries, will run from Thursday, April 29, from 15:00 to Monday, May 3, 2021, at 22:00 (Dutch time) on www .tribalartfair.NL / online fair.

Now, Tribal Art Fair Amsterdam is an internationally recognized art fair not only for collectors, but also for dealers, interior decorators, and museum curators in the field of tribal art. The fair is usually held at De Duif in Amsterdam. But due to the pandemic, it was held online last fall and had about 9,000 visitors.

In addition to galleries that participated in the first online exhibition in 2020, nine new galleries have signed up for this spring event. Early exhibitors include Rare Photo Gallery in Toronto, which specializes in 19th and 20th century Canadian, American and indigenous photography. It will feature mainly items from India and Oceania.

New Dutch exhibitors, some of whom specialize in antique Asian weapons, are also joining this spring online fair. The Tribal Art Fair Amsterdam will feature a wide and varied selection of objects.

Uli rituals

By Jean-Philippe Beaulieu

Ulis are iconic art objects of oceanic origin. These powerful ancestors were represented at Malagan ceremonies in central New Ireland. Already at the turn of the twentieth century, they were very rare, and we identified over 220 in museums and private collections.

For almost 150 of them, we identified field collectors, and for the most part, the village of collectors and the village from where they came from. The visitors of Tribal Art Fair Netherlands will be taken on a journey through old diaries forgotten in libraries, letters, and old photographs. They will visit museums, private collections, on the hills where the abandoned village of Konombin is hidden, one of the most important ritual places.
