Glory came to the artist after the appearance of her series of porcelain skulls. They make a strange impression: on the one hand, reminiscent of intricately laced lace, and on the other – horror films about alien extraterrestrials. The original romantic impression turns into a feeling of despair and doom.

The idea of this kind of decoration was born from myths that “decorate” death with tales of the afterlife. Sometimes you can draw a literal analogy between the works of Aoki and historical facts. So, one of her famous skulls is very similar to the photo of Otto von Bismarck.

Favorite motives of Aoki Kottsu’s creativity are skulls, crowns and fragments of animals.

Sometimes it creates a feeling that she draws inspiration from the decoration and decor of the palaces of the Russian Tsarist empire.

The fragment of horse legs is very similar to the feet of the horses of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, and one of the sculptures Aoki jokingly calls the “Chicken Poet”, although in fact it is more like a swan from Russian fairy tales.

It’s amazing how Aoki, using the historical traditions of porcelain, its delicacy and fragility, was able to get the material to speak in a completely different language.
