Native Americans were the indigenous tribes that came to America around 15000 years ago. The travelers from Asia are believed to be the country’s original inhabitants. Their nomadic lifestyle represented a zest for living and worshiping God. The vibrant people gave rise to beautiful native American art.

The style is becoming popular again, so let’s look at the popular types of native American art!

The Versatile Native American Pottery

The Native American pottery was utilized for storing grains and water. The vessels were strong, and the artists drew amazing black and white illustrations on them. They are neat and have delicate geometric prints. Today, these handmade art pieces are available in the form of:

Navajo Pottery: Navajo pottery made from hand-dug clay has beautiful brown pots and vases. The drawings of symbols, geometric patterns, and animals illustrate the tribal times.

Horsehair Pottery: It’s a unique style of pottery where the hair from the horse and mane and tail are mixed with the clay to form beautiful abstract patterns.

Pueblo Pottery: Pueblo pots made by one of the ancient pueblo tribes are a treat for the eyes. Women made these pots by making long coils of clay and overlapping them. Then the pot was dipped in “slip” water, giving it a smooth and shining texture. It had polychromatic colors, black on cream, etc. The representation of angles, flowers, animals, etc., looks extraordinary.

Storytellers Pottery: Storyteller pottery is a beautiful art representing the stories and mythological characters of the time. The pottery has extraordinary figures and looks very attractive.

Wedding Vases: As the name depicts, the wedding vases signify marriage. The long cylindrical vases were placed outside the house where the ceremony would take place. It looks very sophisticated and beautiful.

Beautiful Native American Paintings

All the tribes of native Americans produced some iconic art. They used colors from roots, berries, and tree bark and made amazing hues. They would crush and grind them. Charcoal was also a very important coloring agent.

The painting displayed the illustrations of wars, chiefs, headdresses, and more. The use of earthy tones with warm colors in extraordinary native American paintings is a gift to our present generations. Native American sand painting replicas are also available these days.

It’s believed that an expert would draw this painting on the sand to cure anyone who was ill during that era. The person who needed healing was asked to sit on it. It has beautiful illustrations of mountains, patterns, animals, etc.

Durable Hand-Woven Baskets

The incredible baskets were a necessity more than decorative pieces back then. But, the tribal people infused an element of art into it. They used amazing skills, elements, colors, and patterns, which are becoming popular now.

The baskets are women by coiling, twining, and blending both techniques. The thread is given a strong foundation by twinning both horizontally and vertically. They used materials according to their geographical availability.

For example, northwest Indians used sweet grass. Pines and needles were used by the southern tribes.  At the same time, some of the others used spruce root, cedar bark, yucca, and sumac.

Rugs With Enchanting Patterns

The native American rugs are undoubtedly the most beautiful form of artistic approach. The carpets were used to live in harsh cold conditions. The talented trivial people spun cotton to make amazing rugs that developed with the time.

It has geometric patterns, lines, angles, and many shapes. The colors can be brown, white, red, and brown. Today these vintage rugs are available readily, which signify the cultural diversity and history of the Native American tribes.

The exceptional art of wood carving in household items is a magnificent example of the precision and patience of American tribes. One of the most popular wood carving examples is the Cherokee mask.

First, the tribals used Cherokee wood to cut and sculpt faces, deities, and many figures. Later, tribals from all the places started sculpting on argillite, silver, gold, bronze, stone, ivory, and glass. You can easily spot carved masks, utensils, and many figures. It’s all derived from the artistic native Americans.
