300 Years Of Russian History And Art On Auction In Monaco

MONACO, OCTOBER 20th, 2017 – The auction house Hermitage Fine Art shall present over 500 items of Russian art and history of the XVIII – XX centuries on October 27th-29th at Monte-Carlo Metropole hotel.

The auction catalogue includes works of Russian art and graphics, engravings and posters, ancient books, autographs, photographs, items of decorative and applied art, as well as items of Russian military history, phaleristics and numismatics.

An important distinction of the catalogue are the special themed sections dedicated to the Romanovs dynasty in the form of art and engraved items, as well as dedicated to 100th anniversary of the 1917 Revolution in Russia, memorial items belonging to the last tsar rule, the documents and books telling about the causes and stages of the revolutionary movement. An unusual surprise for the guests will also be a selection of books from the library of Russian businessman B. Berezovsky.

The organizers decided to dedicate their first auction to the memory of a wonderful Russian poet, a Don Cossack, a man of culture and bibliophile Nikolay Turoverov (1899-1972). The catalogue presents a large selection of books and autographs from Turoverov-Oznobishin’s collection.

Among other items Hermitage Fine Art will present early but excellently crafted work by Konstantin Makovskiy “Salome holding the head of John the Baptist at king Herod’s feast”; the paired dessert vases crafted by the Imperial glass works for the Petergof “Cottage” palace; the most rare samples of porcelain owned by members of the Imperial House; the album of essay engravings “Darling” by F. Tolstoy; autographs of Peter the Great, Anna of Russia, Catherine the Great, Alexander I, Nicolas II, Rasputin, Stalin; the last letters of the love correspondence between Alexander II and Catherine Dolgorukov, archive materials of His Highness duke S. G. Romanovskiy; a most rare album of photographs about the early history of Russian aviation; a no less interesting and rare album of photographs dedicated to conclusion of the 1918 Brest-Litovsk Treaty.

And, as a true piece de resistance, the auction will feature a unique memorial item – a pad crafted by two august sisters – Empress Alexandra Feodorovna and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna.
