Syed Haider Raza’s Tapovan Sets Auction Record for a Modern Indian Artist

The second day of Christie’s Asian Art Week achieved strong results for both contemporary and classical Indian and South Asian Art with South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art totaling $10,289,250, the highest sale total achieved for the category this season, and Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Works of Art totaling $6,528,000. There was active participation from registered bidders across 21 countries with representation from five continents including North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

The top lots of the sales were a masterpiece by Syed Haider Raza, Tapovan, painted in 1972, which realized $4,452,500, setting a new auction record for the artist and category, and A Large and Important Silver-Inlaid Gilt Bronze Figure of Buddha, Shakyamuni, Tibet, circa 1400, which sold for three-times the low estimate to an in-room bidder for $3,612,500.
