Bridget Jones Statue Unveiled in Leicester Square, London

A permanent tribute to the beloved character Bridget Jones has arrived in the heart of London! A bronze Bridget Jones statue has been erected in Leicester Square, celebrating the enduring legacy of the films and the iconic character.

The Bridget Jones statue, depicting the character made famous by Renée Zellweger, was unveiled as part of the “Scenes in the Square” project in Leicester Square. This initiative, a partnership between the “Heart of London” business alliance, the Leicester Square administration, and Westminster City Council, marks the 25th anniversary of the first Bridget Jones film.

Leicester Square, a popular destination in London, is already home to statues of other film icons, including Harry Potter, Mr. Bean, Batman, and Mary Poppins. The Bridget Jones statue joins this impressive collection, further solidifying Leicester Square as a hub for movie lovers. You can also find Paddington Bear, Charlie Chaplin, and even the Iron Throne from “Game of Thrones” in Leicester Square.

The unveiling ceremony for the Bridget Jones statue was a star-studded affair. Attended by Renée Zellweger, alongside fellow cast members Sally Phillips, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Leo Woodall, the event celebrated the impact of Bridget Jones on popular culture. Eric Fellner, co-chairman of Working Title Films, the studio behind the Bridget Jones movies, was also present.

The bronze Bridget Jones statue, crafted by London studio 3D Eye, portrays Bridget in a recognizable outfit, clutching her diary and pen – a nod to the original film. The 200-kilogram statue perfectly captures Bridget’s relatable and endearing qualities.

Zellweger spoke at the event, highlighting the character’s lasting appeal: “Bridget kind of gives us permission to be ourselves… She’s like a friend to me. You know, she kind of reflects our humanity.”

Created in 1996 by British author Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The first film adaptation hit theaters in 2001, followed by successful sequels.
