Artist : Naomi White

A lovely collection of highly detailed and evocative paintings by artist Naomi White.
Naomi White is an artist and educator. Her work has been shown throughout North America and Europe, and is held in both public and private collections.

She teaches in the MFA Photography department at the New York Film Academy and UCLA Extension. Her studio is located in Highland Park. White’s work draws from a diverse background in art history and film, investigating themes of identity construction in our camera-bound world, focusing on how photography affects materials, memory, and culture.

Award winning realist painter Naomi White’s visual language is at once painterly and generous. Capturing the fleeting quality of light and shade with small delicate brush marks, her attention to detail signals a personal experience of nature. Rather than focusing on grand narratives, White’s works have an ability to find beauty within the small details of fallen leaves and garden beds.

“I love working with light and the way it changes a vista throughout the day. The different shadows and patterns it makes and the way it can completely change colours from one moment to another depending on the time of day or even the season you see it in. I paint in a variety of sizes but particularly enjoy painting on a large scale. I love the amount of detail and impact you can achieve with size. I suppose I have a documentative approach but one that looks for an emotional reaction not a rational response.” Artist Statement, Naomi White.

White has been exhibiting since 2002 and has held numerous solo exhibitions around Australia. Most recently, she has been selected as a finalist in the 2017 Tattersalls Art Prize and the 2016 John Leslie Art Prize, 2016 and the 2015 Mosman Art Prize. In 2014 she won first prize in the $18,000 Calleen Art Award, as well as being awarded one of four Commended Awards as a finalist in the 2014 Tattersall’s Art Prize. In 2012, she was Highly Commended for the Calleen Art Award, also winning the People’s Choice Award. She has previously been a finalist in the John Leslie Art Prize, the Wynne Prize and the Paddington Art Prize. She has also been a two time winner of the Tallarook Acquisitive Art Prize.
