Children See The World In This Way. Artist Robert Gonsalves

The paintings by the Canadian artist Robert Gonsalves essentially visualize the illusory nature of our reality, the intangible world of dreams, childhood fantasies and fears. The artist incomprehensibly transfers the child’s attitude when you are the “center of the universe” when your world is not limited by the size of the room and the fantasy is off the scale!

The pictures show the usual objects. In Gonsalves, unlike other surrealists, objects practically do not lose their “objectivity”, but at the same time, they smoothly flow into infinity. This plastic overflow contains a paradox. Robert focuses on mystery, inconspicuous in the stream of everyday life.

Robert Gonsalves was born in Toronto 60 years ago. They say that he started drawing at 2 years old, and by 12 already understood the laws of perspective, was fond of architecture. At the same time, he became acquainted with the surreal works of Salvador Dali and Yves Tanguy. The style of the famous Surrealist gurus was so struck by the child’s imagination that for several years he painted paintings only in this style. The final formation of the artist’s artistic style occurred after acquaintance with the “magical realism” of Rene Magritte and Esher.

The artist did not immediately decide to dedicate his life to painting. He worked as an architect, in parallel creating theatrical scenery and frescoes. But in the early 90’s, after a series of successful exhibitions and rave reviews, Robert decided to radically change his life.

The artist managed to create his own, recognizable style and handwriting. His slightly naive paintings are witty and without a heaped plot. Each picture reflects the moments of life of an ordinary person who suddenly finds himself in a world of dreams and illusions. Robert does not try to copy the glorified masters or surpass their creativity, he creates his own cozy world of sleep and reality.
