Dad Turns His Sons’ Doodles Into Anime Characters, And The Result Is Amazing

Thomas Romain is a French anime artist who lives in Tokyo. He’s worked on various series including Space Dandy, Basquash, and Aria, but his best ideas actually come from his sons. Working together in what he calls the Father And Sons Design Workshop, Thomas and his kids come up with all sorts of weird and wonderful characters. Well, his kids actually come up with them, and then Thomas adds his professional touch to turn them into everything from steampunk doctors and snake fighters to cloud dwellers and sand golems. Check out some of our favorites below, and don’t forget to vote for the best!

Originally, Thomas planned to become an engineer, but he realized that he didn’t have the personality to do so. From there, he started drawing.

After a period of working in micro-studios, he met Savin Yeatman-Eiffel. Savin, who made a team for the prototype of Oban Star Racers, advised that Thomas enter Gobelins School of image, an elite animation school in France. From there, he was exposed to Japanese anime.

Along with Tania Palumbo, they worked together in Gobelins School of Image in France, and created a short film called “Les enfants font leur cinéma” that means “the children made their own movies”. It was released in 2000.

After that, in 2001, they created “Garage Kids”, the initial prototype of Code Lyoko.

Not only that, he also spends some time with his two sons. His sons create a character by drawing, and then Thomas recreates them as anime characters. This project is called “Father and Sons Design Workshop”. It is also available on his Patreon account!
