The Artist Creates Clever “Fossils” Using Live Plants And Gypsum

Rachel Dein casts flowers and various other objects to create fossil-looking tiles. She presses the objects into wet clay, then pours in a mixture of plaster and concrete. Sometimes, Dein adds paint, too. The process captures the detail of the objects, and the casts have great definition.

“I enjoy the magic of plaster casting to create fossils from everyday life,” Dein wrote on her website, “whether it’s a shell found on holiday, your grandmother’s treasured lace, a Christening gown, or the flowers from your wedding.” Her casting adventure started from a visit to a flower shop, where she was encouraged to develop her plan of casting a wedding bouquet. Dein remembers the casting classes she had in art college, started experimenting with materials, and the rest is history!
