Two Exciting New Museums in Abu Dhabi Blend Dinosaurs and Emirati Heritage

This month marks the arrival of two significant additions to Abu Dhabi’s cultural landscape: The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and the Sheikh Zayed National Museum. Both contribute to the growing collection of Abu Dhabi museums, further solidifying the city’s position as a global cultural destination. Located on Saadiyat Island, near the Louvre Abu Dhabi, these new museums in Abu Dhabi promise enriching experiences for visitors of all ages.

A Journey Through Time at the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi

The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi (NHMAD) is a marvel in itself, housed in a stunning, purpose-built structure designed by Dutch firm Mecanoo. With architecture reminiscent of ancient ziggurats, the building is as captivating as the exhibits within.

Spanning 35,000 square meters, this museum targets younger audiences with a fascination for space, geology, and, of course, dinosaurs. Skeletons of diplodocids, brachiosaurs, and other impressive creatures greet visitors, setting the stage for a 13.8-billion-year journey from the Big Bang to the age of mammals. Interactive “laboratories” enhance the learning experience making it a hit among young naturalists.

Celebrating the Legacy of a Nation at the Sheikh Zayed National Museum

Adding to the array of Saadiyat Island museums, the Sheikh Zayed National Museum opened its doors on December 3rd. The museum is a tribute to the “father of the nation,” Sheikh Zayed, who transformed Abu Dhabi into a modern metropolis. Designed by Foster + Partners, the building’s iconic “sails,” visible across Saadiyat Island, symbolize falcon wings, deeply meaningful to Emirati culture.

Inside, the 56,000-square-meter museum features an extraordinary lobby, evoking the Guggenheim’s iconic staircase on a grander scale. The exhibitions explore the history, culture, and landscapes of the UAE from prehistoric times to today. The museum boasts a 600-meter botanical garden, Al Masar, showcasing Arabian flora. While the museum focuses on UAE history, curators have added the hall dedicated to pearl diving, reflecting this important heritage in the region. Ultimately, the Sheikh Zayed National Museum offers a comprehensive narrative of the Emirates, from ancient settlements to modern achievements, offering foreign guests to dive into the local culture.

Through these new museums in Abu Dhabi, the city now offers residents and guests an unmatched opportunity for cultural exploration.
