Skulptur Projekte Münster Announces First Artists for 2027 Edition
Skulptur Projekte Münster has begun to shape its 2027 edition with the announcement of its first participants and curators, setting the stage for a decennial that will unfold without the presence of its founder, Kasper König, who died in 2024. The exhibition, one of the most closely watched public art events in Europe, will open on June 12, 2027, in Münster, Germany.
The sixth edition will be curated by What, How & for Whom / WHW, the Croatian collective composed of Ivet Ćurlin, Nataša Ilić, and Sabina Sabolović. In a statement, the group said it is interested in questions of marginalization and togetherness, as well as in how open Münster is to different people and perspectives. The curators described the city as containing many “cities within the city,” and said their conversations with artists have centered on shared narrations and objects that connect local experience to broader elsewhere.
The first five artists named are Oscar Murillo, Selma Selman, Hew Locke, Iza Tarasewicz, and Róza El-Hassan. They make up one-sixth of the planned 30 participants, with the remaining artists to be announced later.
Murillo’s commission will include communal cooking and collective sharing at the former Officer’s Casino, developed in collaboration with local crop producers. Locke is preparing an installation on colonialism for the Haus der Niederlande at the Krameramtshaus, the site where the Netherlands and Spain signed the 1648 agreement that ended the Eight Years’ War. Selman will address globalization through a work involving scrap at the former Hörster Friedhof. El-Hassan’s project on migration will appear in two locations, the Botanical Garden and Berg Fidel, while Tarasewicz will create a work at a former farm focused on the passage of the seasons.
Since König founded Skulptur Projekte Münster in 1977, the exhibition has helped turn the city of roughly 300,000 into a destination for large-scale sculpture beyond the museum. Münster regularly acquires a few works from each edition, leaving behind permanent pieces by artists including Thomas Schütte, Bruce Nauman, and Claes Oldenburg. The 2027 edition will also coincide with Documenta in nearby Kassel, a pairing that is likely to intensify attention on Münster’s public art landscape. The exhibition is organized by the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur.
