About the Exhibition
Consisting of 26 original works, Wallace Woo’s first part of his Stalactite series delves into the geological architecture of the natural world. Woo tells stories through a seeping slowness of ink and acrylic. Time is a major player in his artistic narratives; layers of pigment gather and settle across the surface, mirroring the gradual accretion through which caves, stone formations, and earthly histories come into being.
Notably, Woo’s paintings transcend simple representations of geological forms. Indeed, they enact the very processes they reference. Elements of gravity, chance, material resistance, all become active agents within the work, shaping outcomes that cannot be fully anticipated. In this sense, each composition compresses vast scales of geological time into an intimate pictorial surface, asking the viewer to encounter something both immediate and immeasurably slow.

Woo tells stories through a seeping slowness of ink and acrylic. Time is a major player in his artistic narratives; layers of pigment gather and settle across the surface, mirroring the gradual accretion through which caves, stone formations, and earthly histories come into being.
In a world where communication and technology are expanding at an ever-increasing pace, Wallace’s works serve as gentle reminders to slow down. Attentive to the patience of geological time, he breathes life into stillness and tranquility into creation. There is beauty to appreciate not in urgency or temporality alone, but rather, beauty in accumulation and growth and persistence of time.
Each painting acts as an arena for a carefully choreographed dance between intention and surrender as Woo guides the movement of the medium while remaining mindful of the wants and tendencies of the settling ink. For instance, in STA#36, the paint appears to resist a singular trajectory. Scalloping waves of alternating light and dark acrylic trace the shifting currents of the composition. Thus, the work is a record of moments of falling, pausing, redirecting. Rather than imposing complete control over the surface, Woo allows the material to participate in its own formation, creating works that emerge through a dialogue between artist and medium.
