Adam Umbach is Finding Home

Born in Chicago and currently residing in Brooklyn, NY, Adam Umbach is known for experimenting with abstraction, geometric painting, and expressionism within his work. A biographical painter, Umbach’s chosen subjects, which often repeat through differing bodies of work, belong to a personal and familial iconography. Though sourced from his life, Umbach’s paintings invite viewers to connect with this imagery by evoking their own experiences and memories.

On view in Maine beginning July 5, Finding Home, will feature a collection of paintings by Umbach that represent ways in which he has pondered the idea of finding home in different forms and at different stages of his life. There have been times when home has seemed elusive, yet visible, as in the painting Light Home.”

Umbach states, “As an adult I have traveled around the world – meeting all kinds of people along the way – and I have come to understand that many are looking for this very same feeling of home. Similarly, the objects and creatures in my paintings are all searching for a place to call their own and the feeling of safety that it brings.”

Umbach has exhibited his large-scale paintings nationally in galleries including Cavalier Ebanks Galleries, Virgil Catherine Gallery, Carver Hill Gallery, and Chase Edwards Contemporary. He has also shown in numerous art fairs, including Moniker Art Fair, New York, Market: Art & Design, Miami, West Palm Beach, Bridgehampton, NY, and Philadelphia. He spent several years living and working on Islesboro in Maine, which informed and inspired his artistic practice.

Finding Home will be on view from July 5-28.
