AI Colorization of Ansel Adams’s “Moonrise” Triggers Ethics Fight at Aipad

A colorized, AI-generated version of Ansel Adams’s “Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico” has become the latest flashpoint in photography’s uneasy encounter with artificial intelligence. The image, shown by New York gallery Danziger at the Association of International Photography Art Dealers Photography Show in April, was offered in three edition sizes of ten for $6,000, $8,000, and $10,000.

The controversy sharpened after the Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust said it had not been consulted or notified before the work appeared. In a statement posted on social media, the trust said the gallery had exploited Adams’s name, his reputation, and his most recognizable image, and asked that the work be removed from display. It also accused Danziger of using the Aipad presentation to promote a commercial effort to colorize works from other artists’ estates with AI.

James Danziger defended the project on Monday, saying the image is in the public domain and that he had legal advice before creating it. He said he began with an AI prompt, then worked the result further in Photoshop and other digital tools. In his account, the goal was to make a visually convincing image that remained grounded in admiration for Adams’s photograph and in the scene the photographer encountered on US Highway 84.

The dispute has quickly moved beyond one gallery wall. Pete Souza said that something being legal does not make it morally acceptable, while David Kennerly said Adams would have hated the image and pointed to Danziger’s earlier criticism of colorizing black-and-white photographs. Aipad said it is taking the matter seriously and is updating its ethics policies and presentation bylaws to address artificial intelligence.

For photography, the argument is no longer only about what AI can make. It is about who gets to decide how a legacy is used, and what obligations remain when a work is technically available but still culturally charged.
