All You Should Know About the Venice Biennale

In this article we are going to analyze one of the greatest global cultural affairs.

The Venice Biennale was first established in 1895. It is a cultural institution which, as the name suggests, takes place every two years in the city of Venice, Italy.

The organization behind this global international art fair has been supporting the arts for over 120 years. The organization not only hosts one of the most anticipated art exhibitions but is also at the center of the research and promotion of contemporary art. The initiatives through which the institution does this include various activities dedicated to specific sectors such as art, film, architecture, music, theater, and dance.

The Venice Biennale welcomes over 500,000 visitors over several months. This makes it one of the largest art expositions in the world.

The 59th International Art Exhibition is back in Venice from 23 April to 27 November 2022. The 2022 edition is curated by Cecilia Alemani, the first Italian to receive this important title. Alemani is a curator based in New York.

In addition to an extensive and impressive career associated with the Venice Biennale, Alemany understands the importance of her curatorial choice for the international art community. Among the 213 artists selected for the 2022 competition, only 21 identify as male. This is a first for the Venice Biennale. This is the first women’s majority catalog of the exposition.

The title of the 2022 edition is Milk of Dreams. This is a reference to a series of drawings by surrealist artist Leonora Carrington.

This year Venice Biennale edition is dedicated to three specific ideas of artistic inspiration:

  • evolving ideas about the human form;
  • relationship with technology,;
  • the connection between people and the planet.

The exhibition features more than 1000 works of art. The Venice Biennale brought together 80 national artists in the legendary Giardini Pavilions in the center of Venice and in the Venice Arsenal to showcase their artistic treasures. The international composition includes 5 new participating countries: Uganda, Nepal, the Sultanate of Oman, the Republic of Cameroon, and Namibia.

This year’s edition is sponsored by the Italian Ministry of culture and is curated by Eugenio Viola. The Venice Biennale is also dedicated to the development of education in the art landscape. The organization is specifically targeted at students of all levels of education and ages. Sincere initiatives have been taken over the past two years to increase student participation.

This year, an extensive educational program has been organized, continuing previous developments. In 2022, the organization specifically targets individuals and groups. There is a growing incentive to reach children, families, students, adults, professionals and even universities. The purpose of the educational project is the active participation of participants in seminars and excursions of the organization.
