Early Dynastic Tombs in Upper Egypt Point to the Origins of Pyramid Building
Archaeologists in Upper Egypt have uncovered two tombs at Gabal El-Teir, a site whose Arabic name means “Mountain of the Birds,” adding a new layer to the study of ancient Egyptian burial practices. The tombs date to 3100 to 2686 B.C.E. placing them in the Early Dynastic period, when funerary architecture was still taking shape.
The discovery matters not only because of its age, but because of what remains visible in the structures themselves. According to Archaeology Magazine, the tombs may help researchers trace the development of funerary architecture, and the thick walls at the bottom that narrow toward the top could represent an early stage in pyramid construction.
Ahram Online reported that the first tomb is a rare architectural model distinguished by a geometric design, while the second closely resembles it and is better preserved. Hisham El-Leithy, secretary-general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), said the find is similar to the tomb of King Den in Abydos, a comparison that highlights the archaeological weight of the Gabal El-Teir site. He also noted that the necropolis was used continuously from the Predynastic through the Late Period.
Even where stone blocks were removed in later periods, the surviving sections preserve important evidence of construction technique. Researchers have identified oxide lines that suggest precise stone-cutting methods, along with large wooden supports used to reinforce the walls. Those details offer a rare glimpse into the practical knowledge behind some of Egypt’s earliest monumental architecture.
Excavations at Gabal El-Teir are ongoing, and archaeologists expect additional discoveries. For a site already tied to long-term burial use, the new tombs may help clarify how early Egyptian builders moved from simple funerary forms toward the architectural logic that would eventually culminate in pyramids.
