Art Basel Basel Opens With Cautious Optimism as Dealers Reassess the Market

Basel is once again the center of the art trade this week, but the mood is more measured than euphoric. Art Basel opens to VIPs at Messeplatz on Tuesday with 290 participating galleries from 43 countries and territories, and many dealers are arriving after a stretch of uncertainty that has reshaped buying habits across the market.

For Paris gallerist Jocelyn Wolff, the fair still brings the familiar strain of high participation costs for a small gallery in the 8th arrondissement. This year, though, he says he feels less pressure than usual, helped by pre-sales that have already given his booth some momentum. Wolff will present a solo Kabinett display of works by Marcell Cahn, with prices ranging from €15,000 to €160,000 ($17,000–$185,000).

That quieter confidence reflects a broader shift. The art market is emerging from a roughly three-year correction that followed the post-pandemic speculative burst, and the recovery has been uneven. Christie’s November auction season was buoyed by a $181 million sale of a Jackson Pollock painting, while the Art Basel & UBS Global Art Market Report, released in March, said art sales returned to 4 percent growth after two years of decline.

Still, the market is not back to its pre-correction habits. Dealers continue to describe softness in ultra-contemporary work, and several sources point to a wider mistrust of primary-market pricing. At the same time, historical material and works with clearer context have held their appeal, suggesting that collectors are becoming more selective rather than simply retreating.

Art Basel CEO Noah Horowitz said the cooling has been concentrated in the speculative segment, not in collector interest overall. That distinction may define this edition of the fair. With summer approaching and the trade set to slow, Basel is likely to serve as a test of whether confidence is returning in a durable way — or only at the market’s most established end.
