Art Basel’s New Basel Exclusive Program Puts the Spotlight Back on the Fair Floor
Art Basel opened its Swiss edition in Basel this week with a clear message for a market still sorting out its fault lines: not everything should be seen first on a screen. The fair’s new Basel Exclusive program asks participating galleries in the main sector to hold back select works from digital previews until the fair opens, a move designed to make the in-person encounter feel less optional.
The initiative arrives during a bifurcated first half of 2026. At the top end, the market has remained resilient, with trophy works and safer categories such as Old Masters and Impressionism continuing to perform. But the middle and emerging contemporary market has remained under pressure, a tension that was underscored earlier this month when Pace announced 50 layoffs and cut 50 artists from its roster. In that context, Art Basel’s latest changes read less like a single intervention than a broader recalibration.
Vincenzo De Bellis, Art Basel’s global director of fairs and chief artistic officer, said the program was not meant to solve one specific problem. Rather, it is intended to reaffirm what a fair can do that a PDF cannot: stage the first physical encounter with a work. He noted that digital distribution has expanded access and market reach, but argued that visual art still depends on direct viewing.
The response from galleries suggests the idea has traction. Of 240 eligible galleries, 193 opted in. Participation was voluntary, and De Bellis stressed that the program had to make sense for exhibitors’ businesses in order to work at all.
Art Basel has paired Basel Exclusive with a broader set of exhibitor supports for 2026, including a freeze on booth fees, an expanded step-up program for first- and second-year exhibitors, and sliding-scale pricing in its main sector. Taken together, the measures point to a fair trying to protect both its commercial ecosystem and the value of physical presence at a moment when the market is increasingly divided between the strongest names and everyone else.
