In the modern world, where ecological disasters and mass species extinction are becoming the new norm, art takes on the role of not only a mirror reflecting reality but also a tool capable of changing our perception of the world around us. Artist Vasil Akulov, in his new project “The Red Book. Animals,” addresses one of the most pressing issues of our time—the loss of biodiversity on the planet.

“The Red Book. Animals” is an artistic exploration dedicated to the sixth mass extinction currently underway. According to scientists, nearly 900 animal species have disappeared from the face of the Earth over the past 500 years, and more than 35,500 species are now at risk of extinction. The causes are human activities: illegal hunting, deforestation, climate change, environmental pollution, and other factors.

Vasil Akulov, known for his deep interest in nature and its fragility, creates a series of works that not only draw attention to the issue of extinction but also compel viewers to reflect on the future of humanity. His monochromatic paintings depict animals on the brink of extinction: the blue whale, the polar bear, Grevy’s zebra, the golden eagle, and others. The artistic technique Akulov employs—cut-out silhouettes of offspring on the canvases—becomes a powerful metaphor for the loss humanity may face in the near future.

“The killing of animals feels to me like a collective suicide of humanity, dooming itself to a path of slow extinction,” says the artist. His works are not only a call to action but also an attempt to comprehend our role in the planet’s ecosystem.

The project “The Red Book. Animals” continues the tradition of artistic engagement with ecological issues, initiated by masters such as Andy Warhol, who in 1983 created a series of silkscreens depicting endangered species. However, while Warhol used bright, psychedelic colors to draw attention to the problem, Akulov opts for a monochromatic palette, emphasizing the drama and depth of the ecological crisis.

Curator Alexander Burenkov notes: “Akulov’s works are not only an artistic statement but also a philosophical reflection on our responsibility to the planet. His art makes us think about what we will leave behind for future generations.”
