Basel Satellite Fair June Skips 2026 Edition Amid Partnership Shift
June, the boutique Basel fair known for its stand-less format near the Messeplatz, will not return in 2026. The decision comes just as Basel Art Week gets underway, and co-founder Esperanza Rosales said the pause follows “unforeseen changes in its external partnerships.”
Rosales said the fair is stepping back to reassess its direction and aims to come back next year with a refreshed edition. In her words, the break is meant to support “developing the fair’s future direction” while responding to “the rapidly evolving realities of the contemporary art ecosystem, and landscape.”
Founded in 2019 by Rosales and Christian Andersen, June has carved out a compact place in Basel’s satellite-fair circuit. Rosales also owns VI, VII gallery in Oslo, while Andersen runs the eponymous gallery in Copenhagen. Past editions have typically included around 15 galleries, with recent participation from small, mostly European dealers such as Fabian Lang of Zurich and Charim of Vienna.
The fair’s absence will be felt most by galleries that rely on Basel week’s dense network of parallel events to reach collectors and curators. For a fair built on intimacy rather than scale, the pause underscores how dependent this part of the market can be on stable partnerships and a sharply defined identity. Rosales said she remains committed to June’s future and focused on shaping a renewed edition for next year.
