BBC Reporter Says Broadcaster Shelved Banksy Footage From New York Reveal

A former BBC correspondent says the broadcaster chose not to air footage he captured of Banksy during a 2018 mural unveiling in Lower Manhattan, setting off a familiar debate over anonymity, access, and the ethics of exposure in the art world.

Nick Bryant, who previously served as the BBC’s New York correspondent, said in a recent Substack post that he had stayed in touch with Banksy’s PR team after covering the artist’s 2013 New York residency. That connection, he wrote, led to a phone call one morning in March 2018 warning him that Banksy would unveil a new work somewhere in the city.

Bryant said the location turned out to be The Houston Bowery Wall, the long-running outdoor mural site in Lower Manhattan known for street art by international artists. The work featured Kurdish artist Zehra Dogan, not the Donald Trump image Bryant had expected in the middle of Trump’s first term. Bryant wrote that he and his cameraman arrived quickly, spotted a man he believed was Banksy leaving a cafe with a takeaway coffee, and filmed him driving away on Houston Street.

He described the material as a “world exclusive” and said the footage showed the artist with fresh paint on his fingers. But Bryant also said the BBC faced an “institutional and personal dilemma.” On one side, he wrote, was the journalistic instinct to air the story. On the other was the concern that revealing Banksy’s identity would compromise future work and weaken the political force of the artist’s anonymity.

According to Bryant, the internal debate in London tipped against broadcast. He said a senior colleague argued that the BBC should not be the organization to tell children there was no Father Christmas, while the arts editor and head of news also supported withholding the footage. Bryant said the broadcaster ultimately “buried the footage.” The BBC has not publicly commented on the account.

The episode underscores how Banksy remains one of contemporary art’s most closely guarded figures. Reuters has previously claimed the artist is Robin Gunningham, though the mystery surrounding his identity continues to shape the public fascination around his work.
