Bayeux Tapestry Exhibition Sets British Museum Ticket Record Before Opening
The British Museum has already turned its forthcoming Bayeux Tapestry exhibition into a record-setting event. On July 1, ticket sales reached £2.5 million ($3.3 million), the highest single-day total in the museum’s history, as roughly 80,000 people attempted to book seats for the show. Some visitors reportedly waited in queues for up to nine hours.
The exhibition, which will present the medieval embroidery depicting the Battle of Hastings, is scheduled to run from September 2026 to July 2027. Demand has been so strong that tickets for 2026 dates are sold out, with another release for 2027 planned for October.
The response underscores the enduring pull of the Bayeux Tapestry, one of the most closely watched historical works in Europe. Its return to Britain after nearly 1,000 years has clearly struck a nerve with audiences far beyond the usual museum crowd, combining rarity, national memory, and the kind of institutional scale that can still generate a public rush.
The announcement also arrives during a busy stretch for the international art calendar. Frieze Abu Dhabi will hold its first edition November 19–22 at Manarat Al Saadiyat, while Paris Photo returns to the Grand Palais November 12–15 with 242 exhibitors. Hamburg will stage its inaugural art week September 3–6, bringing together galleries, museums, and independent spaces across the city.
Market news has been equally active. Phillips sold 231 works from the collection of disgraced art advisor Lisa Schiff for $1.9 million, and Bonhams brought in £9.8 million ($13.1 million) across seven Classics Week auctions in London, led by a new world auction record for Georgios Klontzas’s 16th-century The Fall and Redemption of Man (the Spada Triptych), which sold for £1.9 million ($2.5 million).
Taken together, the week’s headlines point to a market and museum season shaped by scale, scarcity, and institutional spectacle — with historical works still capable of commanding the sharpest public attention.
