Claude Lalanne Mirror Ensemble Sets $33.5 Million Record at Sotheby’s

A 15-piece ensemble of bronze and copper mirrors by Claude Lalanne (1924–2019) sold for $33.5 million with fees at Sotheby’s in New York on April 22, setting a new auction record for the French artist and pushing past the secondary-market peak long held by her husband and collaborator, François-Xavier Lalanne.

The result more than doubled the lot’s $15 million high estimate and drew five bidders over 10 minutes, according to a Sotheby’s spokesperson. For a market that has increasingly rewarded the Lalannes’ whimsical but meticulously fabricated designs, the sale marked a notable recalibration: Claude’s work, long overshadowed at auction by François-Xavier’s larger pieces, is now commanding attention on its own terms.

Edith Dicconson, founder of Dicconson Fine Art and formerly a senior leader at Kasmin gallery, said the ensemble’s importance was difficult to overstate. “Outside of Versailles, it is arguably the most important ensemble of mirrors ever conceived as a unified interior. The market is recognising the importance of that,” she said.

The mirrors’ provenance has been central to their appeal. Commissioned by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, the 15 botanical-inspired works were originally installed in the music room of the couple’s Paris apartment. They first came to auction in 2009, when Christie’s sold them for €1.8 million as part of its landmark Saint Laurent and Bergé collection sale. The winning bidder then was Terry de Gunzburg, the former creative director of Yves Saint Laurent Beauty and the force behind Touche Éclat.

The ensemble later remained largely in storage, aside from its inclusion in a 2010 Les Lalanne retrospective at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. It was the leading lot in a standalone design sale devoted to the collection of De Gunzburg and her husband Jean.

The Sotheby’s result also extends a rapid run for Claude Lalanne in the market. Her previous auction record was €4.9 million in 2023, set by one of her signature choupette bronzes. Last week, her monumental golden-colored sculpture La Pomme de New York sold for €6 million at Christie’s Paris.

For now, the mirrors stand as a reminder that the market for Les Lalanne is no longer being measured only by scale or by the better-known name. It is increasingly rewarding the singular force of the work itself, especially when rarity and provenance align so precisely.
