Dutch Court Sentences Three Men in Drents Museum Heist After Romanian Treasures Were Recovered
A museum robbery that rattled both the art world and diplomatic relations has ended with prison terms for three Dutch men. A court in the Netherlands sentenced Jan B. Douglas W. and Bernhard Z. to 47 months each for the January 25, 2025 theft at the Drents Museum in Assen, where Iron Age objects from Romania were on view in the exhibition “Dacia—Empire of Gold and Silver.”
The stolen works included three golden spiral bracelets and the Coțofenești helmet, a celebrated Geto-Dacian battle helmet made of electrum. All four objects had been loaned by the National History Museum of Romania in Bucharest. The robbery, carried out with explosives, took place as the exhibition was nearing its close.
Two of the bracelets and the helmet were later returned in April after the suspects helped arrange their recovery as part of a plea deal. The helmet came back slightly dented; the bracelets were reported to be in mint condition. A third bracelet has not been recovered.
The case quickly became larger than a single museum theft. Romanian officials criticized the handling of the aftermath, and the director of Romania’s National Museum of History was dismissed. Dutch authorities also paid €5.7 million in insurance fees to Romania, a figure that underscored the scale of the loss and the sensitivity of the loan agreement.
Bernhard Z. rejected the plea deal, arguing that prosecutors lacked evidence that he had entered the museum. The Dutch Public Prosecution Service sought a longer sentence for him than for the others, but the court ultimately imposed the same term on all three men. In a remark reported by CBS, a judge said the thieves should “profit from the return of the treasures.”
The verdict closes one chapter of a case that exposed how vulnerable museum loans can be when cultural heritage becomes the target of organized crime — and how quickly a theft can become a matter of national pride, insurance, and international trust.
