Gladstone Gallery to Relocate Its Seoul Space to Hannam-dong With Ed Atkins Opening
Gladstone Gallery is moving its Seoul location to Hannam-dong later this year, a shift that places the gallery in one of the city’s most closely watched cultural corridors. The new outpost will occupy two floors of the 739-28 Hannam Building at Yongsan and is being designed by Minsuk Cho of Seoul-based firm Mass Studies.
The relocation positions Gladstone near Pace Gallery’s Seoul space and the Leeum Museum of Art, underscoring how the neighborhood has become a focal point for contemporary art in the city. The gallery plans to open the space in late summer, ahead of Frieze Seoul in September, with a solo exhibition by Ed Atkins, his first in Seoul, inaugurating the venue.
Gladstone opened its Seoul gallery in Gangnam district in 2022, joining a wave of Western galleries that established a presence in the city just before the launch of Frieze Seoul that year. Since then, the space has served as the gallery’s flagship in Asia and has hosted solo exhibitions by Ugo Rondinone, Jaider Esbell, Joan Jonas, Cecily Brown, Ian Cheng, and Alex Katz, among others.
The move also reflects Gladstone’s broader push across Asia. The gallery said the new space will further strengthen its presence in the region, while it expands participation in fairs including PhotoFairs Shanghai and Art Busan in May, alongside continuing presentations at Art Basel Hong Kong and Frieze Seoul.
In a statement, senior partner Max Falkenstein said Gladstone has long approached its program from a global perspective, and that the new space marks an important milestone for the gallery. Partner Paula Tsai said Asia has become an increasingly important part of the gallery’s network, adding that the Seoul move will deepen relationships with collectors, curators, and museums across the region.
