UK’s First Permanent Mobile Museum Sets Out for a National Tour in 2027
The UK is preparing to send a museum on the road in a way it has not done before. From 2027, the country’s first permanent mobile museum will begin touring England, carrying exhibitions built around the Government Art Collection and partner institutions in a bid to reach audiences far beyond the usual museum hubs.
The initiative is backed by the UK Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the French arts charity Art Explora, which have each contributed £800,000. The museum is currently under construction in Telford and has been designed by the London-based firm Ab Rogers. According to the project statement, Art Explora will present three 12-week exhibitions each year, with one annually devoted to works from the Government Art Collection.
The remaining program will be shaped with national and regional partners including the National Portrait Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery, Birmingham Museums Trust and National Museums Liverpool. That structure suggests a model built not only on mobility, but on collaboration — a way of distributing major collections across the country without requiring visitors to travel to a single institution.
The project arrives with a working precedent. Art Explora’s existing Mobile Museum is currently in Plymouth with Shaped by the Sea, on view until September 13, featuring works by Zineb Sedira, Lubaina Himid and JMW Turner. Another Art Explora Mobile Museum is scheduled to travel this summer to the southwest and northwest of England. Earlier tours brought Tate collection works to the Liverpool City Region in 2023 and to the Midlands and North of England in 2024.
Art Explora was founded in 2019 by Frédéric Jousset, who has described the organization as an international foundation. Jousset, the son of former Centre Pompidou curator Marie-Laure Jousset, also founded WebHelp, the tech support and outsourcing company valued at €2.4 billion in 2019, and is among the funders of V&A East Storehouse in Stratford, east London.
In a statement, Jousset said Art Explora was founded on the belief that art should be accessible to everyone. He added that the organization’s growing Mobile Museum fleet in France has shown, over 15 years, the value of bringing national collections directly to communities. The UK project, he said, marks an important step as that model expands across Europe.
If the plan succeeds, it could offer a new template for public access: less dependent on geography, and more responsive to the places museums have historically struggled to reach.
