In the 1960s an unknown photographer made talented photos in Barcelona, and the author’s name was searched by all the Internet. The amazing story of the Spanish Vivian Mayer.
In 2001 of summer , an American Tom Sponheim was resting with his wife in Barcelona. On the way to the temple of the Holy Family, they wandered into a noisy flea market, where Tom drew attention to the stack of photographic negatives on the table. For $ 3.50 he bought an envelope with all the frames.
Returning home, Sponheim scanned the negatives and realized that he had in his hands the work of an unknown but very talented photographer.
In 2010, he created a page on Facebook in the hope of finding the author of the pictures or people who are captured in them. Several people from Barcelona really recognized themselves or their friends in the frames. But the personality of the photographer remained a mystery.
In 2017, Begonia Fernandez, who viewed the popular page on Facebook, admired the images and resolutely undertook the search for a photographer.
After days and nights spent studying the details and backgrounds in the pictures, she determined that many of them were made in the primary school area. Then she unearthed the announcement of 1962 about the photo contest, for participation in which the locations of the shootings coinciding with these shots were offered.
Further searches led Fernandez to the archives of the Photographic Association of Catalonia. Flipping through the dusty pages of the old magazine, she suddenly recognized the photo from the Facebook page laid out by Sponheim. It was an image of a praying woman, who won the fourth place in the 1961 competition. The unknown photographer was Milagros Caturla.
She was the seventh child in the family with ten children, by education – a teacher, but worked as an administrator. Milagros photographed with great enthusiasm and won in several local competitions. She died in 2008.
Now Fernandez and Sponheim are working on organizing an exhibition of works by Caturla, whose story is so reminiscent of Vivian Mayer.
