James Turrell’s Largest Museum Skyspace Opens at ARoS in Aarhus

A new landmark in light and space has arrived in Denmark. James Turrell’s As Seen Below, now open at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, is the artist’s 100th Skyspace and the largest version ever created for a museum. Unveiled in time for the summer solstice, the work turns a vast underground chamber into a carefully calibrated encounter with sky, color, and duration.

To enter the installation, visitors descend through a dim passage marked by thin tracks of light before emerging into a domed room with a circular opening cut into the center. The effect is both architectural and atmospheric: the sky appears framed, suspended, and altered by the surrounding structure. Turrell has long treated light as a medium in its own right, and here that idea is pushed to an unusually large scale.

The dome measures more than 130 feet in diameter and 52 feet high, with an oculus nearly 20 feet across. Its interior surface covers nearly 13,000 square feet and is animated by more than 1,100 light sources. During the day, a retractable lid slowly closes over the opening, shifting the view from open sky to a glowing disc that can read as moonlike, pearly, or almost planetary. The color program changes with remarkable subtlety, moving from lavender to pink, from blue to purple, from cyan to emerald and chartreuse.

The experience is designed to be physically flexible rather than fixed. Visitors can sit on the concrete ring benches, walk the perimeter, or lie on the polished granite floor and look straight up. In that stillness, the work can produce the disorienting depth shifts associated with a Ganzfeld effect, though Turrell resists prescribing a single way to encounter it. “Each visitor looks at it in their own way,” he has said. “I do hope they give it attention, but the Skyspace asks nothing.”

ARoS has also tailored the work to Aarhus’s Nordic light, where summer sunsets can stretch late into the evening and winter daylight is brief. The installation can be seen during regular museum hours, or in specially timed sunrise and sunset sessions booked in advance. The museum is planning additional programming inside the dome, including concerts, yoga, meditation sessions, and activities for children.

The project’s scale reflects both artistic ambition and engineering precision. Designed with Schmidt Hammer Lassen, the dome was built from fiberglass shells covered with concrete, earth, and grass, making the structure feel at once subterranean and open to the weather above. In a city where light changes dramatically across the year, Turrell has created a work that does not simply frame the sky — it makes time itself feel newly measurable.
