Louvre Crown Jewels Investigation Turns to Belgium as Missing Treasures Remain Unfound
French investigators are reportedly pursuing fresh leads in Belgium as the search continues for the eight crown jewels stolen from the Louvre on October 19, 2025. The inquiry has widened after authorities examined suspects’ phones and found photographs of the Louvre and its Galerie d’Apollon, along with contacts and geographical records pointing to Belgium.
The theft, which targeted the museum’s Apollo Gallery, has already led to at least 11 arrests and five charges. Yet the jewels, valued at €88 million ($102 million), have not been recovered, and officials still have no confirmed evidence of where they were taken after the robbery.
The case has become a test of both speed and coordination. French officials are working with Belgian authorities, though neither the Belgian federal prosecutor nor the Paris public prosecutor has confirmed the partnership. That silence has done little to slow speculation around the investigation, especially as reports suggest the suspects may have ties to freight theft and a prior truck robbery arrest in Belgium.
One detail continues to haunt the case: Empress Eugénie’s crown was dropped during the escape, and investigators believe the jewels may have been separated in the thieves’ haste. In footage from a parking garage after the robbery, Abdoulaye N., who is suspected of entering the Louvre, appears to search his pockets, while Slimane K. is seen arguing with him.
The possibility of a larger criminal network remains unresolved. Abdoulaye N. reportedly told authorities that an Eastern European man approached him on October 17 to recruit him for the crime, while Ghelamallah A. said separately that an Arabic man enlisted him. So far, however, investigators have found no proof of an organized enterprise behind the theft.
That uncertainty matters because the jewels may already have been broken apart and moved through illicit channels. If so, the window for recovery narrows with each passing day, even as the investigation expands across borders.
