Luminaries, an Interactive Light Installation in New York, Sets Brookfield Place’s Winter Garden Aglow This Holiday Season

The mesmerizingly colorful light display Luminaries in the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place is reinvigorated this holiday season with a full slate of light and music shows and programming. Luminaries is comprised of 640 custom lanterns that change color and intensity, resulting in a hypnotic and ever-changing light show. Located in lower Manhattan, Brookfield Place is a premier destination for holiday shopping, and the Luminaries adds an inimitable festive element that can’t be missed.

Commissioned by Arts Brookfield—an arts organization that supports innovation in all forms of art through free art exhibitions and cultural experiences at Brookfield locations—Luminaries was created by LAB at Rockwell Group. A key goal for the design studio when planning Luminaries was to create a new holiday tradition that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Part of this tradition is the inclusion of Wishing Stations, where visitors can interact with Luminaries. At the motion-activated Wishing Stations, wishes are “sent” to the hundreds of lanterns overhead, where they are transformed into a kaleidoscopic display of color and light. Free and open to the public, the act of wishing becomes a symbolic and collaborative community event. Additionally, for every interaction at Luminaries, Brookfield Place is donating $1 (up to $25,000) to Outreach, an organization offering services in New York City and Long Island to youths and adults struggling with substance abuse.

In addition to the regular hours of the Luminaries, through January 6, 2023, at the top of every hour from 8am to 10pm, there are special light shows that are set to classic holiday songs, such as by Michael Bublé and by Tony Bennett. The first weekend in December, there will also be three ticketed performances of in the Winter Garden, choreographed by Keith Michael of the New York Theatre Ballet.

New York City is considered a top destination for the holidays, and the city is full of lights and magic. Luminaries in the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place is another holiday tradition to enjoy, where individuals and families alike can be immersed in the beauty of the glowing light of the lantern installation.
