Seattle Police Say “Catastrophic Damage” at Chihuly Garden and Glass After Late-Night Vandalism

A late-night incident at Seattle’s Chihuly Garden and Glass left multiple works shattered and museum staff facing an estimated $240,000 in losses, according to the Seattle Police Department.

Police said a 40-year-old man, who was not publicly identified, was arrested for assault after allegedly destroying several plant-like sculptures on the museum’s grounds. In a blotter report, officers characterized the scene as “catastrophic damage.”

Authorities described finding “large pieces of colorful broken glass” strewn across a walking path and scattered through the surrounding area. The damaged works were identified as sculptures by American glass artist Dale Chihuly, whose large-scale installations and vessel-based works have long been prized by collectors and institutions.

The Seattle Police Department said museum security personnel identified the suspect, leading to his arrest. Police allege that, during the encounter, the man threw broken glass shards at security staff. No one was injured, according to the report.

Officers further alleged that the man picked up a shard of glass and attempted to stab a museum security officer multiple times. The police report included photographs that purported to show fragments from the destroyed sculptures spread across the ground.

Chihuly Garden and Glass is located at Seattle Center and opened in 2012 on the site of a former amusement park. The museum is dedicated to Chihuly’s work across media and scale, including a prominent 100-foot-long installation that reads like a suspended wreath of red flowers.

The incident adds to a growing list of high-profile cases in which museums and cultural sites have had to contend with vandalism and threats to staff safety, underscoring the vulnerability of outdoor installations and the high stakes of protecting fragile materials like glass.
