New York’s World Cup summer is getting an art-world counterpart
A free activity guide designed by artist Rich Tu is being distributed across all five boroughs this summer through a partnership between Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the FIFA World Cup 2026 New York New Jersey Host Committee. The project is meant to carry the tournament’s energy beyond stadiums and into neighborhoods, public spaces, and community gatherings.
Tu, who created the official FIFA World Cup 2026 New York New Jersey Host City Poster, shaped the guide around themes of community, culture, and team spirit. It is available in English and Spanish and can be picked up at watch parties, Open Streets events, and community partner sites citywide, or downloaded online.
The incentive is straightforward: New Yorkers and visitors who complete the guide, or present a photograph of it, are eligible for free admission to the Whitney through July 31, 2026, while supplies last. The guide also unlocks a special program on July 12, when Tu will lead an event at the museum in collaboration with Poster House. That program is part of Free Second Sunday and West Side Fest, a free weekend-long cultural celebration involving more than 20 arts organizations across Manhattan’s west side.
The initiative fits neatly within the Whitney’s broader access strategy. The museum already offers Free Friday Nights, Free Second Sundays, and free admission for visitors aged 25 and under, making the new guide less a one-off promotion than an extension of an existing public-facing model.
The World Cup itself will unfold across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, but New York’s version of the moment is being framed as something more local and participatory. By linking a global sporting event to museum access and neighborhood programming, the Whitney and its partners are testing how cultural institutions can meet a city where it already is — in the street, in the park, and in the shared rituals that make a summer feel civic rather than merely celebratory.
