Milan’s Miart Returns Next Week With a Much-Anticipated Roster of Events, Including a Cake-Cutting Courtesy of Maurizio Cattelan

The lead up to the 2023 edition of Miart—the annual modern and contemporary art fair presented in Milan April 14–16—has been steadily gaining momentum and building excitement for its “crescendo” opening. Crescendo is both the title and the keyword of the 27th edition of the fair, emphasizing the range of new or expanded programing, roster of participating galleries, and premier of Milano Art Week.

With more galleries presenting than in any year previous—169 galleries from 27 countries—the forthcoming iteration of Miart will be the most diverse yet, with an increase of 40% in the international exhibitor roster.

The fair’s three flagship sections promise a comprehensive look at the positioning of modern and contemporary art today. Established will offer an expansive presentation ranging from modern masters to the most recent artworks by prominent contemporary artists; Decades highlights historical works from the 20th century, delineated by decade; and Emergent will spotlight the latest work from the newest generation of artists.

With the Emergent section curated by independent curator Attilia Fattori Franchini, and Decades curated by ICA, Milan, Director Alberto Salvadori, there is also a broader, overarching curated program to look forward to. Extending past the walls of the fair, Miart will engage with the city at large. Miart Live at Triennale Milano will host a series of assemblies and conversations that center on the role of art in contexts and disciplines that are not traditionally seen as part of the art world. It will also function as the premier of Fondazione Nicola Trussardi’s 20 year anniversary celebration of being a nomadic museum—which will kick off with the cutting of a cake that is donated by Maurizio Cattelan.

Further amplifying the reach of Miarts engagement with the greater arts community, the project the Sound of Miart powered by Radio Deejay, Radio Capital, and M20 will broadcast three music playlists over the radio that convey the themes of the fair.

In conjunction with the collaborations with Triennale Milano and Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, the forthcoming edition of Miart will underscore the fair’s commitment to producing and promoting culture, and fostering engagement not only between existing art world ecosystems but with the people and region that the fair is situated within.
