“Museum Oscar” for best architecture won the gallery from Norway

The Twist gallery, located in the Kistefos Museum and Sculpture Park about an hour’s drive from the Norwegian capital Oslo, has won the LCD Award for Best Architecture in Berlin 2020. In this category, it outperformed two competitors, the Qatar National Museum in Doha and the Victoria and Albert Museum in the Scottish Dundee.
The LCD Awards (Leading Culture Destinations) are called the “Museum Oscar” for outstanding cultural achievements. This year it was presented for the sixth time, and for the first time, the ceremony was held not in London but in Berlin. The award’s founders recognize exceptional cultural initiatives – both existing and emerging – to inspire dynamic exchange and create a global network between culture and tourism.

The twist at the Kistephos Museum is both a gallery, a bridge, and a sculpture. The 1000 square meter building was designed by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) from Denmark. It connects the banks of the Randselva River and approximately in the middle is transformed into a sculptural form, “twisting” by 90 degrees. Such influential publications as “The New York Times”, “Bloomberg” and “Telegraph” have already named the gallery a cultural center that must be visited.

Birgitte Espeland, director of the Kistefos Museum and Sculpture Park, noted the importance of the LCD Awards – it puts the institution “on the map and increases its recognition worldwide”. “We are looking forward to presenting exhibitions and artists of international importance in the coming years, as well as creating an unforgettable experience for visitors,” added the director.

Another nominee from Norway, the Bergen Assembly Foundation, was awarded the Avis Travellers’ award for the best cultural festival by the international jury. The same award in the category “Best Developing Cultural City” was presented to the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi.
