Mysteries of the great works of art, which don’t know 90% of people

There are works of art and architectural masterpieces, which are perfectly familiar to everyone since childhood. But if you examine each of these creations in detail, have many mysterious and unknown details.

Apartment on the top floors of the Eiffel tower

Gustave Eiffel, the Creator of the tower, built and equipped the apartment for himself on the upper floors. He often used it for relaxing or entertaining. He once had a long conversation there with Thomas Edison.

It is interesting that the second picture has a slightly different perspective, which can create a 3D effect. Perhaps the clothing and the scenery was painted by a different artist, or even several. According to scientists, this is an earlier version of the Mona Lisa.

The time capsule at Rushmore Mount

During the construction of the monument architect Gutzon Borglum wanted to create inside the rock Hall Chronicles — the secret room, where future generations will be able to find key documents and information about the history of the United States. To do this, he carved in the rock behind the head of Abraham Lincoln the cave. But soon after Borglum died and the work was not finished.
In 1998, more than 50 years after his death, copies of important documents and memoirs of the presidents, were sealed inside the unfinished hall, which now plays the role of a time capsule.

The original form of the great Sphinx

The great Sphinx, the oldest statue in the world. It was originally covered with bright paint which has survived only in fragments, behind the ear. Also originally, the Sphinx had a nose and slip the ceremonial beard. Its fragments can be seen in the British and Cairo museums.
There are suggestions that the original Sphinx had the head of a lion and a human head instead of it was carved much later, which explains the lack of balance between a gigantic body and a small head.

The painting “Danae” Rembrandt began to write 2 years after his marriage to Saskia van Uylenburgh. The artist portrayed his wife on many of his paintings, and has long remained a mystery why the resemblance to Saskia, not so obvious, as in his other paintings 1630-ies, and used a style more akin to creations of the later period of his work.

It turns out that the picture was altered after the death of the artist’s wife, at the time when he became interested in Gertie Dirks. The facial features of Danae in the picture has been modified in such a way that combines both favorite female artist.

The name of the most famous sights of great Britain

Strictly speaking, the name “big Ben” refers not to the entire tower, but only to the massive bell inside it. The official name of the bell tower until September 2012 was the “Clock tower of Westminster Palace”. The bell tower is now officially called “Elizabeth Tower”.
Still it is not known after whom it is called the bell big Ben. One theory is that in honour of the head casting of the bell — a large man, who bore the nickname “Big Ben”. The second theory refers to the Boxing champion in the heavyweight Benjamin Count.

 

The color of the Golden Gate bridge

The Golden Gate bridge is one of the most photographed objects in the world. Its construction had long coordinated with the U.S. Navy. The sky on the painting The Scream”

The original name of the legendary paintings of Edvard Munch “the Scream” sounded like “the Cry of nature.” In his diary the artist writes:
“… suddenly the sky turned blood red I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence — I looked at the blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city…”
In 2003 a team of astronomers have suggested that the bright red color of the sky, struck the artist, was caused by the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883. The atmosphere was thrown a huge amount of volcanic ash, which over the next several years worldwide, there was a particularly colorful, fiery sunsets.
