Independent Returns to New York at Pier 36, Expanding Debut Program and Large-Scale Installations

Independent is changing its New York look and feel this spring, trading the maze-like rooms of Spring Studios in Tribeca for the broad, industrial sweep of Pier 36 on the East River. The move gives the contemporary art fair a larger physical footprint and a new architectural wrapper: the pier’s exterior is being reworked for the event by the architecture firm Solid Objectives Idenburg Liu (SO–IL).

The fair runs May 14 to 17 and brings together 76 exhibitors, with a notable emphasis on first-timers. Nearly half of participating galleries are showing at Independent for the first time, and more than a third of the stands will be solo presentations by artists who have never had a solo presentation in New York before.

That discovery-driven identity has been formalized this year as Independent Debuts, a curatorial initiative designed to spotlight emerging or overlooked practices. Among the debuts: Berlin’s Buchmann Galerie will introduce German artist Bettina Pousttchi to New York audiences with sculptures that draw on the visual language of the street, taking cues from bike racks, bollards, and other urban fixtures. Reykjavik’s i8 Gallery will present tapestries by emerging Icelandic textile artist Arna Óttarsdóttir, alongside related works on paper.

Independent’s international profile remains pronounced, with 42 percent of exhibitors based outside the United States. At the same time, the fair is leaning into its home city, assembling a strong contingent of New York galleries, including several from nearby neighborhoods. Among those named are Spencer Brownstone Gallery, Superhouse, Post Times, Uffner & Liu, and Jupiter.

One of the New York newcomers to the fair is the Chinatown-based gallery David Peter Francis, which will present large-scale, quasi-sculptural abstract photography by Carrie Schneider. Schneider’s visibility will be amplified by a concurrent appearance in the Venice Biennale, positioning the fair presentation within a broader international moment for the artist.

The expanded venue also opens the door to more ambitious works. Independent will include large-scale and site-specific installations, including a large bronze by Francis Upritchard and an iteration of Gretchen Bender’s influential “TV Text & Image” series from the 1980s and 1990s, presented by Sprüth Magers. The fair has also commissioned an installation for its main entrance by Nikolas Ventourakis, developed with the Athens-based gallery Callirrhoë.

Fashion and art will intersect in another special presentation: a selection of more than 20 designs by Rei Kawakubo, founder of Comme des Garçons, installed within a bespoke architectural environment that Kawakubo is designing.

Independent’s May edition lands in the thick of New York’s spring art calendar, coinciding with a cluster of fairs across Manhattan and the season’s marquee evening auctions at Bonhams, Christie’s, Phillips, and Sotheby’s. With Pier 36 as its new stage, the fair appears poised to scale up while keeping its reputation for discovery at the center of the experience.
