Ibiza’s Art Scene Finds a More Deliberate Pulse During CAN Art Fair
Ibiza is better known for its after-dark excess than for sustained cultural attention, but this summer the island offered a different kind of itinerary. As CAN Art Fair closed its fifth edition on June 28, a small cluster of venues suggested that Ibiza’s art life is becoming more than a seasonal accessory to the party circuit.
At Can Arnau, one of the island’s oldest fincas, Ruttkowski;68 staged a pop-up exhibition during fair week inside a house restored over decades by the late Swiss fashion photographer Rolf Bichsel. The setting gave the presentation a quiet authority. Among the standouts were bronze sculptures by German artist Stefan Strumbel (b. 1979) and abstract works by Carolina Aguirre, whose sweeping planes carried ghostly impressions of the female body.
The most fully realized environment belonged to Mexican conceptualist Stefan Brüggemann (b. 1975), whose Ibiza studio has become a destination in its own right. The compound rises from red earth and dense shrubbery as a polished silver volume, but the effect is less architectural statement than total artwork. Inside, gold leaf, silver-leafed plants, spray-painted marble benches, and a totem-like boulder outside combine to form what Brüggemann has framed as a “living sculpture.”
A more playful register appeared at Los Enamorados, where Dutch artist Frits Achten has taken over the hotel’s halls with papier-mâché forms that seem to hover between artifact and organism. Some bulge from the walls like growths; others resemble weathered relics from an invented past. The result is strange, tactile, and unexpectedly well suited to a place where visitors move easily between lunch, the beach, and the club.
That tension between leisure and looking is part of the point. CAN curator Saša Bogjev described art in Ibiza as “cultural sprinkles,” a phrase that captures the island’s current scale: not overbearing, but enough to shift the atmosphere. In a place built on distraction, these works ask for only a little serious attention — and perhaps that is precisely why they linger.
