Paintings from the National Academy of Design – The first exhibition

Paintings from the National Academy of Design Museum is the first exhibition to highlight a key aspect of the National Academy of Design collection. This is the joint presentation of a portrait of an artist and his or her thesis.

Aurora Boreal – Frederic Edwin Church

The American Federation of the Arts (AFA) is glad to announce the National Tour for America: Pictures from the National Academy of Design. This is an exhibition created in collaboration with the National Academy of Design (NAD). For America is the first exhibition to highlight a fundamental feature of the National Academy of Sciences collection: the joint presentation of a portrait of an artist with his or his representative work.

Little Miss Hone [Samuel Morse], 1894

The Hundred Unusual United States Paintings of the exhibition represent not only a visual document of membership in the Academy but also the unique history of American painting from 1809 to the present day. The exhibition will visit eight venues across the United States, presenting important paintings to audiences across the country, and will enrich the dialogue of academics, students, and artists of all ages by experiencing American masterpieces firsthand.

From its founding in 1825 to the nowadays, The National Academy of Design Museum required all academics to donate representative work to the Academy’s collection. And from 1839 to 1994, the National Academy of the Arts also required employees to submit their own hand-drawn portraits.
