Guillaume Cerutti Steps Down as President of the Pinault Collection After Just 13 Months
Guillaume Cerutti, the former Christie’s chief executive who took the helm of the Pinault Collection little more than a year ago, has stepped down from his role as president of the organization, which operates major contemporary art venues in Paris and Venice.
The departure, first reported by Glitz and later confirmed by The Art Newspaper, is striking for its speed: Cerutti moved from London to Paris for the position and exits after only 13 months. No public explanation has been given for his decision to leave.
In the interim, French billionaire François Pinault, 89, is expected to take on Cerutti’s responsibilities himself. The arrangement is notable given reports of Pinault’s health issues, though the collector has remained closely identified with the institutions that bear his imprint.
Cerutti, 60, is not disappearing from Pinault’s broader sphere of influence. He continues to chair the boards of Christie’s and Stade Rennais Football Club. Both entities, along with the luxury goods conglomerate Kering, are owned by Artémis, the Pinault family holding company.
Cerutti’s short tenure comes at a moment when the Pinault Collection’s museums have become central to the collector’s public legacy. In Paris, the Bourse de Commerce has positioned itself as a high-profile platform for contemporary art within a landmark building, while in Venice the collection’s long-running presence at Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana has helped shape the city’s exhibition calendar beyond the Biennale cycle.
Because no reason has been offered for Cerutti’s exit, the implications for the organization’s leadership structure remain unclear. What is evident is that the Pinault Collection, a private enterprise with outsized influence on the European museum landscape, is entering a transitional phase with its founder stepping back into day-to-day oversight.
For observers of the art market and museum world alike, the shift underscores how closely the Pinault Collection’s institutional identity remains tied to François Pinault himself — even after the appointment of a seasoned executive brought in to professionalize and extend that vision.
