Scandalous art objects: a lot of noise – because of what?

The angry press, the furious audience, the kilometer-long queues for the exhibition, the record price at the auction – the hype around the paintings can spoil the artist’s nerves and can make him a name and career. Today we are telling you about the scandalous past of masterpieces. And about which artists could benefit from the scandals. This collection contains 5 the most scandalous works of artists who not only knew how to shock the public but also went down in history.

Armchair designed by Allen Jones, 1969

The artist, Allen Jones in the mid-60s was known as one of the most prominent representatives of British pop art, and his work was considered radical, shocking, and extraordinary. Most of the artist’s works caused a sharp wave of criticism from the female population and were considered “sexist” for excessive frankness. In March 1986, activists presented this work.

The Fringed Islands, Jeanne-Claude de Guyebon, 1983

In 1982, artists Cristo and Jeanne-Claude de Guyebon covered 11 islands in Biscayne Bay in Miami with pink polypropylene fabric. Environmentalists opposed the work, worrying about the effect of synthetic plastic on manatees.

The Self, Mark Quinn, 1991

British artist Marc Quinn created a truly crazy project called “Self”. As a part of this project, he creates sculptural self-portraits from his own blood. The artist began to realize this strange and disturbing project back in 1991. Every five years, Mark makes a new sculpture of his head from blood to capture himself and watch his own aging.

My Bed, Tracy Emin, 1998

“My bed” is a messy, unmade bed, around which various household garbage is scattered. It is believed that the work reflects a new, modern aesthetics that turn externally ugly objects into an object of art. In 2014, the installation was sold for $ 4.3 million at Christie’s auction.

The Tree, Paul McCarthy, 2014

In October 2014, a giant sculpture was erected on Place Vendome in Paris. It caused confusion among the inhabitants of the city. Many people compared it to a sex toy. The artist was even beaten for his work.
