The Best Collections of Contemporary African Art

The African continent is enormous. Contemporary African art has become an abundance of diverse creativity. African culture and art are internationally recognized. It is present there more than in its own territory. Between 90% and 95% of African heritage art is found outside the continent. So where can you see the best collections of African art?

The Zeitz Museum, contemporary art of Africa

The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art

This is the largest museum of contemporary African art in the world. The museum collection is the result of a collaboration between businessman and collector Jochen Seitz and the V&A Waterfront. Located in the city of Cape Town and founded in 2017, the museum has quickly built a solid reputation. Zeitz’s collection features the work of artists such as Kehinde Wiley, Marlene Dumas and Chris Ofili.

The Fondation is located in Cotonou (Benin). Its mission is to promote contemporary African art. The organization accepts and finances artists from different countries of the continent. It also promotes contemporary African art around the world with its incredible collection of over 1,000 works. It enables African sculpture, painting and photography to be recognized internationally.

The private collection of Sindika Dokolo

Sindika Dokolo is believer in African art. He has a private collection of over 5,000 works. As an activist in classical African art, Dokolo bought back works stolen by Europe and returned them to their African owners. And in 2005, he opened the Sindika Dokolo Foundation to build a contemporary arts center in Luanda, Angola. By assembling and exhibiting his incredible collection of contemporary African art, he wants to enable African artists to be recognized both at home and abroad.

The Al Maaden Museum of Contemporary African Art was opened in 2018 and is dedicated to the art of Africa. An independent non-profit museum, MACAAL is located in Marrakech, one of the capitals of contemporary African art. Combining exhibitions and workshops with young talents, renowned African photographers and international sculptors, MACAAL quickly became the center of attention.
