The top biennials and triennials coming up in 2021

The modern realm of the architectural fraternity has grown to popularly celebrate design and critical thinking through various exhibitions and shows in the form of biennials and triennials. Every exhibit projects a new concept and presents an argument on current trends, sustainable solutions, and possible outcomes for the future of the cities. The events, however, are organized by different countries around the world and invite participants to put forth their ideas in the set theme and take part in various activities, workshops, and seminars that allow healthy discussions, experiments, and discussions. Here is a list below of eight events confirmed for a public reception in late 2020 and 2021.

1. La Biennale di Venezia (Venice Architecture Biennale)

La Biennale de Venezia organizes the Venice international architecture exhibition every alternative year to observe perspectives in design and architecture from around the globe. Furthermore, the theme for this year is, “How will we live together?” – a dialogue that opens with designers on possible solutions to current global scenarios and the exhibition will be open to the public between 22nd May to 21st November 2021 at Giardini and Arsenale Venues in Venice, Italy. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the events got rescheduled from 2020 to 2021. The Curator of this year’s exhibit and dean of School of Architecture and Planning, MIT – Hashim Sarkis, states that the title is a social and political question to the current state of rapid changes in societal norms, political polarization, climate change, and expanding global inequalities that push the urgency to ask how architecture and space making can shape possible models to live together.

2. Istanbul Design Biennial –

The 5th Istanbul Design Biennial -“ Empathy Revisited: Designs for more than one” curated by Mariana Pestana with Sumitra Upham along with Billie Muraben that’s organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (iKSV) with the support of the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism. This exhibition presents a program consisting of three main segments: an online series titled critical Cooking Show that opens the Biennial on 15 October 2020, a set of research projects on the Mediterranean basin archived at “The Library of Land and sea” and ARK Kültür that opens to the public on 15 November 2020. A series of interventions themed New civic rituals that will include the entire city and Pera Museum that evolves through 2021. The theme roots to the meaning of empathy by transferring feelings onto material objects and the natural world where the design explores to reach out to the sentiments of terrains, landscapes, microorganisms, and other living species in more than a one-dimensional sphere.

3. London Design Biennale

A place where the world’s most ambitious and imaginative designers, curators, and institutes gather from over 50 countries at London Design Biennale with the theme as Resonance for 2021 explaining that everything we design and create resonates where consequences are both exciting and catastrophic. It investigates the power to reach a mass of digital audiences to question the social media feeds of millions or in the bellies of marine animals; suggesting objects stick around from their concept to the final product. Designers, artists, makers, and thinkers have the power to trigger a thought and emotion in the audience the way they interact with the physical environment around them and bring out possible solutions for a sustainable future and address the global climate change as well as data mining that hinders democracy. The Biennial opens to the public between 1-27 June 2021 with the theme that attributes to target social, political, and ecological causes that shape our society today.

4. La Triennale di Milano –

The Triennale Estate is organized in the Garden Giancarlo De Carlo that aims to present a series of dialogue in this 4-month long program with the idea for the entire city to come and celebrate culture again. The exhibitions open to the public between 15th June to 30th September 2020, hosts a range of meetings, screening, lectures, cabarets, live events, festivals, and activities for everyone dedicated to architecture, design, cities, contemporary art, photography, literature, and philosophy curated by the scientific committee of Triennale Milano, the curators of the Public Programs and other close collaboration with Milan-based cultural organization, such as Milano Urban Center, Amici Della Triennale, AriAnteo, Fondazione Maimeri, Teatro Oscar, I Ludosofici and Dynamo Camp.

5. Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism

The third Seoul Biennale of architecture and urbanism will be open to the public between September- November 2021. The exhibition titles “ CROSSROADS building the resilient city” as a response to growing complex relationships that shape cities in contemporary times and solutions for a more sustainable city for humans. The intention to gather different reflections and ideas on how cities could be sustainable, comfortable, and resilient for its inhabitants begin a showcase of concept from over 100 cities around the world focusing on research to serve positive outcomes towards a brighter future.

6. Quinto Pan-American Architecture Biennale.

7. The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam

The Biennale looks into the works of architecture and urbanism resulting in social importance as the themes revolve around the future of the city intending to create changes possible in the real-world by involving professionals in various disciplines to carry out research and develop solutions for the city of tomorrow. The 2020 biennale rescheduled to open by April-July 2021 to the public with the theme “down to earth” looking at climate change and how its affecting various habitats and finding possible solutions by researching on the impact on the built-environment at present.

8. Tallinn Architecture Biennale

The Tallinn Architecture Biennale (TAB); an international design and architecture festival organized every alternative year in September to address current issues in the built environment to better equip the present and future of the field. The show caters to all architects and people interested in architecture to explore and experience various dialogues that evoke thoughts and responses concerning the theme. The exhibition’s rescheduled for the year 2022 in light of the pandemic while a curatorial competition announced to set the theme of the Biennale. Last year the theme “beauty matters” and the resurgence of beauty in the architectural realization of buildings and cities in various perspectives to fully understand the notions, curated by Dr.Yael Resiner.
