Tokyo Gendai Adds a New Section as It Names 63 Exhibitors for 2026
Tokyo Gendai has set the lineup for its fourth edition, confirming 63 exhibitors for the fair’s return to Pacifico Yokohama from September 11–13, 2026. A VIP day is scheduled for September 10. The announcement shows a fair that is not simply expanding or contracting, but recalibrating its structure as it settles into a more defined identity within the Asian art calendar.
The main Galleries section will include Pace Gallery, Sadie Coles HQ, Ceysson & Bénétière, Mizuma Art Gallery, A Lighthouse called Kanata, and Taka Ishii Gallery. The Eda (“Branch”) section will feature Ippodo Gallery and Mizoe Art Gallery. Nearly half of the exhibitors will take part in Hana (“Flower”), the section devoted to early- to mid-career artists, with Tokyo-based galleries such as AWASE Gallery, CON_, Gallery Common, Harukaito by Island, Maki Gallery, and Misa Shin Gallery among the participants.
The fair’s Tane (“Seed”) section, which is dedicated to digital media including NFTs, animation, film, AR, VR, and gaming, will return for a second year. TAEX will present a Marina Abramović avatar project there. Tokyo Gendai is also introducing a new section, Miki (“Trunk”), focused on works on paper and photography, with exhibitors including Bangkok CityCity Gallery, Fabrik Projects, and Revolver Galeria.
The 2026 exhibitor list is slightly smaller than the 2025 edition, which included 66 galleries. But the more significant change is internal: the main galleries section has been reduced from 29 exhibitors to 17, as the fair adds two new sectors and reshapes its balance. Several high-profile galleries are not returning, among them Almine Rech, Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Gallery Baton, and Galerie Eigen + Art.
In a statement, Tokyo Gendai cofounder Magnus Renfrew said the fair was established to “galvanize cross-cultural exchange” and welcome international audiences to the breadth of contemporary art in Japan. That ambition remains central as the fair enters its fourth edition, with a format that now places equal emphasis on established dealers, emerging practices, and newer forms of presentation.
