Florence’s Neptune Fountain Damaged in Pre-Wedding Stunt, Officials Say
A 28-year-old visitor caused about EUR 5,000 in damage to Florence’s Neptune fountain after climbing the monument in Piazza della Signoria during what authorities described as a pre-wedding challenge. City officials said the incident took place last Saturday afternoon, when the woman mounted the fountain’s rim and moved toward the central figure of Neptune, known locally as the Biancone.
According to the City of Florence, her aim was to touch the statue’s private parts. Officers nearby intervened quickly, preventing further harm. But the damage was not limited to the moment of the stunt. On Monday, specialists from the Fabbrica di Palazzo Vecchio, which oversees maintenance of the Palazzo Vecchio complex, inspected the fountain and found damage to the legs of one of the horses as well as to a frieze the woman had clung to while trying to keep herself dry.
The Neptune fountain carries deep historical weight in the Tuscan capital. Commissioned in 1559 by Cosimo I de’ Medici from Bartolomeo Ammannati and Giambologna, it was created to commemorate the marriage of Francesco de’ Medici and Joanna of Austria. Its monumental Neptune, with a face often read as bearing a likeness to Cosimo himself, has long anchored the square as both civic symbol and tourist magnet.
The city has not yet provided further details about the extent of the damage, which officials described as minor but significant. The woman has been reported to judicial authorities for defacement of an architectural and artistic heritage site and remains presumed innocent until a final judgment is rendered.
The episode is part of a broader pattern that has become increasingly familiar across Italy and other European heritage centers: public monuments and museum works are being tested by overtourism, impulsive photo opportunities, and stunts designed for social media. In Florence alone, the pressure on historic sites continues to expose how fragile even the most familiar landmarks can be when spectacle overtakes care.
