Gold-Leafed Trump Statue Installed at Trump National Doral After Payment Dispute

A 15-foot bronze statue of Donald Trump is now on view at Trump National Doral in Miami, but its arrival followed a tense standoff over money, usage rights, and delivery. The sculpture, which rises to roughly 22 feet with its pedestal, was completed by Ohio-based sculptor Alan Cottrill and finished with gold leaf after he proposed the change to Trump’s team.

That upgrade helped lift the project’s price from $300,000 to $360,000. The work was commissioned by a group of cryptocurrency investors promoting the $PATRIOT meme coin, and Cottrill said the group used images of the statue to market the token before payment had been finalized. He described that use as copyright infringement.

According to Cottrill, the two sides eventually agreed to an additional fee for the image use, but payments later stopped while he was still owed about $90,000 for the remaining balance and related costs. He then refused to release the sculpture, keeping it in an undisclosed location until the dispute was settled.

The impasse ended late last month with a wire transfer of $96,750, after which the statue was delivered and installed at the Miami golf club. Nicknamed “Don Colossus,” the work shows Trump with a raised fist, echoing the gesture he made after a 2024 assassination attempt.

Its placement just ahead of a PGA Tour event ensured immediate attention. Players and spectators noticed it quickly, and the sculpture has since circulated widely online, where reactions have split between praise and criticism. Some observers have compared its scale, pose, and gold finish to monuments associated with authoritarian leaders, including North Korea’s Kim Il Sung, while supporters have treated it as a tribute.

The statue’s path from commission to installation underscores how quickly a single artwork can move between public art, political symbolism, and crypto-era promotion. In this case, the object is not only a monument to a polarizing figure, but also a record of the uneasy overlap between art, branding, and payment disputes in the contemporary market.
