Trump’s Latest White House Image Is AI — and Historically Off
Donald J. Trump has turned another presidential post into a visual puzzle. On Monday evening, he shared an image on Truth Social showing a giant gold bald eagle perched on the Truman Balcony of the White House, clutching a stars-and-stripes shield and framed as “A Golden Gift to the White House for its 250th Birthday Year!” The White House and Trump later reposted the image on Instagram.
The image does not appear to be a straightforward photograph or illustration. CNN reported that its metadata identifies Google AI as the creator. The picture also contains visible inaccuracies: the shield bears 11 stars rather than the customary 13, and the balcony railing differs slightly from the actual Truman Balcony.
The caption is inaccurate as well. The United States is marking 250 years since its founding, but the White House itself was built between 1792 and 1800. Its 250th birthday will not come until 2050.
The post was not an isolated case. Earlier in the week, Trump shared another art-related AI image, this one by Ray Simon, and described it as a “Great painting!” even though it was a print. Together, the posts suggest a growing comfort with synthetic imagery as a political and decorative tool.
That matters because Trump’s visual interventions have extended well beyond social media. He has proposed sweeping changes to the White House and Washington, DC, including razing the East Wing, erecting a 250-foot victory arch, and creating a sculpture garden of “American heroes.” Preservationists and House Democrats have already moved to block some of those plans.
For now, the gold eagle remains only an image. But in Trump’s orbit, even a digitally fabricated emblem can read like a trial balloon for the built environment itself.
