Art Basel’s Basel edition opens with scale, but the more revealing story may be what that scale now demands
The latest edition of Art Basel has brought 290 exhibitors to the Swiss city on the Rhine, reaffirming the fair’s position as the most closely watched gathering in modern and contemporary art. The booths range from museum-caliber Picassos and Warhols to work by younger artists still early in their careers, though the latter category has become less visible in recent years. Collectors including Don and Mera Rubell are on site, alongside the kind of celebrity traffic that has long helped turn Basel into a global art-world stage.
At the center of the fair is Noah Horowitz, who has served as CEO of Art Basel since 2022. His career has been shaped by the fair circuit itself. He first entered the field through VIP, the online art fair launched in 2010, then became executive director of the Armory Show in New York in 2011, a post he held for nearly four years. He later joined Art Basel as head of the Americas, overseeing Art Basel Miami Beach, before leaving in 2021 for a brief stint at Sotheby’s, where he led gallery and private dealer services worldwide. He returned to Art Basel the following year as chief executive.
Horowitz is also the author of “Art of the Deal: Contemporary Art in a Global Financial Market,” published in 2011, a title that now feels especially apt as the fair navigates a more complicated market landscape.
That landscape has changed quickly. Art Basel once operated three fairs — Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong — but has since added Paris and, this year, Qatar. The organization has also introduced Zero 10, a platform for digital art, and the Art Basel Awards. The result is a broader footprint, but also a sharper set of questions about sustainability, expansion, and the strain that an ever-widening fair calendar places on mid-tier galleries.
Basel remains the anchor. Whether the model can keep stretching without fraying is the issue now shaping the conversation around it.
