Taylor Sheridan to Direct 4D Alamo Film for San Antonio Museum
Taylor Sheridan will create a 4D film for the Alamo Visitor Center and Museum, adding a cinematic layer to one of Texas’s most closely watched heritage projects. The film will anchor the museum’s 4D theater, described as the centerpiece of the 160,000-square-foot facility now taking shape in downtown San Antonio.
The museum is transforming the historic Crockett and Woolworth buildings and has been under construction since 2024. It is part of a $185 million revamp of the Alamo site and a larger $550 million Alamo Plan, which aims to broaden how the landmark presents Texas history.
Sheridan, best known for creating Yellowstone, said in a statement that once he saw the theater plan, he knew there was “only one screenwriter, film producer, and director in the world” for the project. Dan Patrick, the Texas lieutenant governor, called the collaboration “an amazing gift from Taylor” and “a big win for Texas.” Sheridan said that telling the story of the Battle of the Alamo, and the sacrifice of those who died there, is an honor he accepts eagerly.
The Battle of the Alamo remains a defining event in Texan memory. In the winter of 1836, roughly 200 men defended the former Spanish mission in San Antonio against a much larger Mexican army led by Santa Anna. After a 13-day siege, the mission was overrun and most of the defenders were killed. The battle helped galvanize Texan forces and paved the way for independence from Mexico.
When it opens in spring 2028, the museum will house more than 5,000 artifacts, including cannons fired during the battle, archaeological discoveries from the site, and personal objects linked to Sam Houston and Santa Anna. The project also includes a café, a rooftop terrace overlooking the Alamo church, and a 700-person event space, signaling that the institution is being built not only as a museum, but as a major civic destination.
