Free And Wild. High-Speed Photography Of Hummingbird By Roy Dunn

Roy Dunn is considered by his peers to be one of the world’s experts in the genre of high-speed photography, specializing in the capture of exquisite wild and free hummingbird images without going near a computer.

The Vault Gallery is excited to announce Roy Dunn’s first exhibition of photographs Of Wild and Free Hummingbirds. Roy is considered by his peers to be one of the world’s experts in the genre of high-speed photography, specializing in the capture of exquisite hummingbird images. Hummingbirds are present in Roy’s backyard garden year-round, and sometimes the summer population peaks at over 150 birds.

Over the past 20 years, he has taken somewhere north of half-million images in his backyard. He is only really happy with about a dozen of them. His exhibition portfolio is mainly of images of hummingbirds photographed against the white stucco exterior of his house – an approach that he considers marries science with art.

The images are captured using a flash duration of around 1/30,000 of a second in order to freeze motion, exploiting specialized equipment that he has designed himself using his skills as an electronic design engineer. All images are shot in camera and no image manipulation occurs -no subject elements are added or removed. In other words, Roy hates the computer. This will be Roy’s first one-man exhibition at The Vault Gallery, Oct 28th – Nov 11th.
